From Online Threats, Theft of Client Data and Potential New Liabilities

Pacific Coast Information Systems (PCIS), together with Vancouver law firm Clark, Wilson hosted "Protect Your Business From Online Threats, Theft of Client Data and Potential New Liabilities" on June 16th, 2004 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver, BC Canada.

PCIS joined forces with Clark, Wilson to provide local business owners and executives with a better understanding of the threats, liabilities, and costs organizations face with respect to information systems security and non-compliance with the Personal Information Protection Act — particularly for British Columbia businesses.

Addressing the issue from their own perspectives in technology and low, Pacific Coast Information Systems (PCIS) and Clark, Wilson both recognize that recent changes to provincial and federal privacy legislation has substantially increased the liability and risk for organizations if they are not proactive in securing their networks and protecting the personal data that they collect and store.

The breakfast seminar featured speakers Paul King (Director, PCIS) and Larry Munn (Chair, Clark, Wilson Privacy Law Group), and was moderated by Kirk LaPointe (Editor, The Vancouver Sun). The seminar addressed a number of issues relevant to businesses in British Columbia, including:

  • How to conduct a risk assessment or technology audit to identify problem areas within your organization

  • Information system practices designed to decrease company liability and avoid litigation

  • Current security technologies and new privacy technologies that can help ensure an organization's information systems provide secure, effective privacy management

  • How to establish privacy policies and procedures within your organization to enable the collection, use and disclosure of personal information without increasing liability
